Obesity is a clinically significant form of being overweight. The measure, called the Body Mass Index, is calculated using the proportion of the patients’ height and weight in conclusion of some measurements and examinations. The result of these measurements will generally be between 20 and 25 in a healthy person. Values between 25 and 30 are defined as overweight; people in this range are primarily recommended diet and exercise. People with a Body Mass Index over 30 are defined as obese; when the BMI goes over 35 the person is defined as morbidly obese. In addition to these index values the fat and muscle mass of the body are also measured in order to determine the target weight. The physician, through the use of these numbers, will recommend the appropriate surgical option to the patient.

Body Mass Index is calculated by dividing the square of the height by the weight.

For Example; Body mass index of a person 1.70 m in height and 120 kg in weight is calculated as;

120 / 1.70 × 1.70 = 41,5

Body Mass Index             Assessment

25.0 – 29.9                          Overweight

30 – 34.9                             Stage I Obese

35 – 39.9                             Stage II Obese

40.0 and above                Morbidly Obese
